Hulu – Hulu is a streaming video service which began in 2007 as a joint venture by Disney, News Corp and Comcast to design an online video service to compete head-to-head with Google and YouTube. Hulu provides free ad-based content on its regular site, together with additional content on Hulu Plus, its paid subscription service.
Hulu streams primarily movie and TV shows, approximately twice as many TV shows as are currently streamed on Netflix. Hulu has become the primary online site for viewing TV shows from Fox, NBC, and ABC. Users can watch tv shows, movies, trailers and other media from networks including major networks and studios including Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC.
Since its inception, Hulu has had exclusive content rights to popular television shows broadcast on Disney and News Corp channels, such as Fox and FX. Current season programming for Disney and News Corp channels are available online only at Hulu.com and the networks’ own websites.
Additionally, Hulu has had exclusive distribution rights to syndicate Disney and News Corp program content to Yahoo, AOL, MSN, xFinityTV, and other third-party content sites.
Hulu has had exclusive content distribution rights for Disney and News Corp programming which made network content available on Hulu.com at the same time that it was available on the broadcast network sites. Additionally, Hulu was the exclusive distributor of the networks’ syndicated content to third party content sites. Reflecting the companies’ desire to directly control the distribution of their own content, News Corp and Disney have elected to have their top shows distributed from the networks’ sites directly to subscribers or to the third party content sites.
Hulu has supplemented its content distribution deals with the networks with developing its own original programming, independendently or in coordination with networks such as the BBC. Hulu is the exclusive distributor of these original series, together with the classic soaps All My Children and One Life to Live.
